"Punch" is NCT 127 at their most confrontational: a brass-and-percussion assault built on a taiko-like drum pattern, blaring horn stabs and a beat that keeps dropping out mid-phrase so the silence hits as hard as the noise. Structurally it refuses to behave — the "chorus" is a shouted gang vocal over rhythmic breaks, tempo shifts arrive without warning, and a martial-arts-inflected sound design (impacts, whooshes) makes the whole thing feel choreographed before you see the choreography. Vocal character is aggression by design: Taeyong's rap is barked and staccato, Mark's is faster and more nasal-forward, Yuta and Johnny anchor the low chants, and the sung lines are pushed to near-shouting. The lyric essence is defiance and self-assertion — knocking down what stands in front of you, a fight metaphor for refusing to be contained — and it functioned as the second act to "Kick It," extending that album's Bruce Lee-inspired framing into a full mythos. It sits at the extreme end of the "SMP" noise-music lineage that defines the group's identity and divides casual listeners. Music for the gym, for confrontation you're rehearsing in your head, for the moment before you do the difficult thing.
