The mood here is different — cooler, more shadowed, like the lights in the room have been turned down by two or three notches. Where other Kiss of Life material leans into the brightness of vintage funk, "Strange" excavates something more ambiguous, building its atmosphere through a groove that feels slightly unsettled, slightly hypnotic. The bass line is the spine of the whole thing, insistent and circular in a way that creates a low-level tension underneath the vocal performance. The vocals lean into a more breathy, controlled delivery, as if the singer is choosing their words carefully, aware that the thing being described resists easy categorization. The song is about the particular disorientation of an emotion or a person you cannot quite define — the feeling of being drawn toward something you do not entirely understand. Production-wise there are flickers of late-night jazz club energy in the chords, a hint of neo-soul in the arrangement choices, but it never becomes a genre exercise. It feels lived-in. You would reach for this on evenings when you are sitting somewhere with a drink you have barely touched, turning something over in your mind, not quite ready to arrive at a conclusion.
