Scooter occupy a specific and irreplaceable position in European electronic music, and "Nessaja" is perhaps their most fully realized expression of the genre they invented: hard trance crossed with rave maximalism crossed with what can only be described as ecstatic absurdism. The production is overwhelming by design — distorted kick drums, an aggressive sawtooth bassline, synthesizer leads that are simultaneously euphoric and slightly unhinged — and yet at the center of the chaos sits a sample from Peter Maffay's children's song "Tabaluga," a gentle, almost childlike melody that should have no business surviving this kind of sonic punishment but somehow emerges intact, even triumphant. H.P. Baxxter's vocal is, as always, a performance of pure confidence: his spoken-word interjections, his barked rallying cries, his barely-sung hooks delivered with the conviction of someone who has never considered the possibility that this might not be working. The track arrived in 2002, when German hard trance was a genuine commercial force, filling arenas with people who wanted music that made no apologies for being exactly what it was — loud, fast, emotionally unambiguous. The lyric, such as it is, gestures toward something like hope or freedom, themes borrowed from the Tabaluga mythology.
