Blind
Hercules and Love Affair
A ballroom floor assembled from grief and urgency — the kick drum hits with religious precision, four beats per measure like a heartbeat that refuses to stop despite everything. Andy Butler built this track from house music's foundational architecture but pulled it somewhere rawer: the hi-hats clatter with a slightly damaged irregularity, string stabs arrive like emotional sucker punches, and the whole production has a lived-in friction that keeps it from ever becoming comfortable. Antony Hegarty's vocal performance is the emotional center, and it is extraordinary — a countertenor delivery of such naked vulnerability that the voice seems to be physically quivering, sustaining notes past the point of safety, reaching for something just beyond its own range. The lyric navigates the particular sightlessness of being overwhelmed by feeling for another person, the way love and desire can strip you of your own perception. This arrived in 2008 as a kind of reclamation — taking the queer history embedded in house and disco and making it explicitly, beautifully visible again. Reach for this in the private moments after emotional intensity, when you need something that holds grief and desire in the same hand without resolving the contradiction.
