This is not the Breathe you might expect from the word — there's no triumphant swell, no power-pop release. Instead the song exhales. Acoustic guitar moves in gentle, unhurried patterns, the tempo slow enough to feel almost suspended, the production gossamer-light in a way that was unusual for early-2000s pop radio without feeling precious or overworked. Branch's voice here is at its most unguarded: soft, close-miked, the kind of delivery that makes the listener feel they've stumbled into something not meant to be overheard.
