Neon

Stephan Bodzin works in analog synthesis the way certain painters work in oil — with an almost physical understanding of the medium's resistance and reward. "Neon" is built on modular and analog synthesizers that produce a kind of luminous, flickering quality, like fluorescent light seen through rain. The bassline is the structural spine: thick, rubbery, slightly overdriven, it anchors a track that everywhere else is reaching upward. Above it, melodic sequences cascade in interlocking patterns that create the impression of motion within stillness, a technique Bodzin has made distinctly his own. The emotional register is one of electric longing — urban and nocturnal, shaped by the aesthetics of a city at night from a height, all light and distance and anonymous movement. There is intensity here but it never becomes harsh; the production, even at its densest, retains a warmth that prevents the music from feeling aggressive. Bodzin is a central figure in European melodic techno, a live performer whose relationship with his machines has the quality of conversation, and "Neon" captures that dialogue at its most fluent. This is music for driving through a city at 3 a.m. with the windows down, or for the moment on a dance floor when the room stops being a collection of individuals and becomes something unified and briefly perfect.
