The premise is so specific it shouldn't generalize, and yet somehow everyone who has ever been through a breakup immediately recognizes it: the discovery that black coffee, bitter and slightly punishing, is exactly the right thing to drink when you are trying to survive someone's absence. 10cm builds the song simply — acoustic guitar, conversational melody, Kwon Jung-yeol's voice doing what it does best, which is make the wry and the heartbroken sound like the same thing. The 2021 version brings a slightly fuller production, a little more warmth in the mix without sacrificing the original's essential spareness, and it suits the song well — this is a re-visitation rather than a reinvention, the same feeling heard from a few years' distance. The humor is crucial and often overlooked: the song is funny in the way that real grief can be funny when you get far enough outside it to see the absurdity, the way you find yourself doing something mundane and profoundly symbolic at the same time. Kwon's vocal delivery is conversational to an unusual degree, almost spoken, which flattens the melodrama and makes the emotion land harder by arriving sideways. This is a cornerstone of the Korean indie singer-songwriter tradition, the kind of song that established that emotional honesty could be packaged in something small and acoustic without needing to be either confessional or overwrought.
