Besharam Rang
Vishal-Shekhar
"Besharam Rang" is audacious in a way that Indian mainstream cinema rarely allows itself to be — which is precisely why it caused the uproar it did and why it works so devastatingly well as a piece of pop craft. Vishal-Shekhar anchor it in a Mediterranean-inflected acoustic guitar figure, light and almost bossa nova in its feel, before expanding into a production that's sun-drenched and textured with flamenco percussion and synth washes. The result is a song that sounds like it was recorded on a yacht in some jurisdiction with very relaxed laws. Caasha Lak and Shilpa Rao trade verses with a playful, unapologetic sensuality — neither voice reaches for operatic emotion, instead settling into something conversational and teasing, as though they are entirely at ease with exactly how good-looking they believe themselves to be. The emotional register is pure, uncomplicated pleasure: warmth, color, desire rendered without guilt or consequence. The melody moves through the verse in a way that feels like meandering, like the song itself isn't in any particular hurry. This is music for a long afternoon somewhere coastal, a glass of something cold, good light. It belongs on a curated playlist titled something like "that trip" — music that isn't about a memory but somehow makes you feel nostalgic for a version of yourself who is more reckless and more free.
