The production is unambiguous in its ambitions: enormous synthesizer chords stack and swell with a theatricality that makes no pretense of subtlety, referencing the maximalist dance-pop lineage from the Pet Shop Boys through early Robyn without being derivative of either. Olly Alexander's voice is the crucial variable here — a falsetto instrument of considerable agility that he deploys with precision, capable of sounding simultaneously euphoric and brittle, as though the joy on display is real but also structurally delicate.
