The smoke in the title isn't metaphorical decoration — it sets a physical scene, a room with bad ventilation and too much thinking happening in it. The song belongs to a lineage of Chinese singer-songwriter work that blurs the line between poetry and lyric, treating the music less as a vehicle for melody than as a frame for language. What it evokes emotionally is the particular romanticism of creative isolation: the belief, held mostly in youth, that staying up late with words and guitars is a meaningful form of resistance against something.
