Where so much of Calibre's catalog leans toward shadows, this track opens with a quality that can only be called playful — but playful in the way a jazz musician is playful, meaning there's deep craft underneath the lightness. The bassline has a loping, almost conversational bounce, trading phrases with a keyboard motif that sounds lifted from a late-night session in some imaginary Blue Note studio. The drum programming here is particularly elastic, each snare snapping with a human looseness that suggests the groove was felt before it was quantized.
