The opening alone establishes a kind of trembling grandeur — voices stacked and slightly smeared, creating a texture that reads simultaneously as chorale music and as the sound of something enormous trying to take off. There is a sense of scale here that the band rarely attempts this directly: the arrangement builds outward in all directions, adding layers not to create density but to create space, a paradox that the production handles with unusual grace. The emotional register is awe mixed with unease, the feeling of standing at the edge of something vast and not knowing whether to step back or forward. Panda Bear's contributions in particular carry a kind of earnest fragility — his voice doesn't soar so much as it reaches, always suggesting effort, which makes the emotion feel earned rather than performed. The lyrical preoccupation is with collective vulnerability, with the shared animal fear that underlies social existence, the frightened creature inside every socialized person. Culturally it arrives at a moment when indie rock was tentatively exploring the possibilities of scale and grandeur without irony, and it holds up as one of the more honest attempts. Best heard alone on a long drive through open landscape, somewhere between destinations, when the sky is doing something dramatic.
