Diggs plays Lafayette as a force of nature rather than a person, his delivery simultaneously theatrical and technically staggering, each syllable placed with surgical precision inside a meter that seems to leave no room. The song also does something structurally daring — it hands Hamilton's narrative to another character entirely, letting Washington's desperation and Lafayette's triumphant return reframe the protagonist from the outside.
