Reunion

There is a cathedral built entirely out of synthesizers, and "Reunion" is what plays when the doors swing open. The track arrives on a slow tide of reverb-drenched guitars and layered synth pads that feel less like instruments and more like weather — a warm front moving in from the horizon. The tempo is unhurried, almost ceremonial, with drums that pulse like a heartbeat measured in geological time. Emotionally, it occupies a register that is difficult to name precisely: not quite joy, not quite grief, but something that lives in the throat when you return to a place that shaped you and find it both exactly the same and completely unreachable. Anthony Gonzalez built M83's entire aesthetic around the idea that adolescent feeling deserves cinematic scale, and "Reunion" is perhaps the purest distillation of that project. It belongs to the lineage of French shoegaze and kosmische music, filtered through the emotional vocabulary of John Hughes films. You reach for it at dusk on a long drive back from somewhere meaningful, or in the quiet after a conversation that changed something permanent in you.
