"Gone" carries the weight of its title honestly, which is not as easy as it sounds. The song is built around absence — the absence of someone, the absence of a version of yourself that existed in relation to that someone — and the production choices reinforce this thematically with unusual intelligence. The sonic palette is more restrained than much of M83's catalog: synthesizers with longer decay times that seem to be disappearing even as they sound, drums that feel slightly muted, as though heard through a wall or remembered rather than experienced directly. The emotional temperature is distinctly autumnal — not the bright grief of fresh loss but the quieter, more disorienting grief of realizing the acute phase has ended and you are now simply living in a world that has been permanently rearranged. The vocal performance is delivered with a kind of controlled fragility, never quite breaking, which is actually more affecting than breaking would be — it captures the specific dignity of someone who has processed something enormous and is now learning to carry it without drama. Lyrically it refuses the consolations that lesser songs would offer, sitting instead with the plain fact of departure and the way life continues anyway, indifferently.
