Interpretation

Where "Flannel" looks outward at objects and places, this one turns the gaze inward with almost uncomfortable honesty. The guitars here are slightly denser, layered with trembling delay that gives the whole track a quality of circling — like a thought you keep returning to without resolving. The rhythm section moves with quiet determination underneath, providing just enough forward motion to keep the introspection from caving in on itself. Getz's vocal delivery is even more restrained than usual, barely above a murmur in places, as if he's thinking out loud rather than performing. The song concerns itself with the interior life — specifically the gap between how we experience ourselves and how we imagine others experience us, the loneliness that lives inside that distance. Turnover's transition from energetic pop-punk to something this hushed and searching was jarring for some listeners and revelatory for others, and this track represents the deeper end of that new direction. There's a patience in its construction that feels earned — nothing is rushed, no hook is dangled as a reward. It suits late nights when you've been in your own head for too long and somehow that feels exactly right.
