Ennio Morricone's theme for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is one of the most architecturally strange pieces of music ever written for a film, and also one of the most immediately recognizable. It opens with a two-note whistle phrase — desolate, almost comedic in its spareness — before a chorus of voices enters with wordless, almost animalistic calls, mimicking coyotes or distant men. Then the electric guitar and orchestra arrive, and suddenly the entire arid landscape of the American Southwest materializes from sound alone. Morricone was constructing a mythology, not a backdrop. He understood that Leone's spaghetti westerns were not realistic — they were operatic, ritualistic, almost mythological in their treatment of violence and honor — and so he scored them as such, blending folk instruments, human voices used percussively, and full orchestral grandeur in ways that had no precedent. The theme carries genuine menace alongside absurdity, the gap between the two never quite resolved, which is exactly the moral universe of the film itself. It has lived far beyond cinema, appearing in stadiums and sporting events, but it loses nothing in those contexts because the feeling it creates — the sense of two forces circling each other before something irreversible happens — is universal. Put it on before any encounter where the stakes feel existential.
