Energy Flash
Joey Beltram
"Energy Flash" arrived in 1990 like a small detonation, and the shockwave never fully dissipated. Joey Beltram built it around an acid bass line that doesn't groove so much as convulse — a 303 pushed past musicality into something almost biological, like a nerve being repeatedly stimulated. The kick drum is enormous, the snare an afterthought, and the overall texture has the compressed, pressurized quality of a room running out of air. There's a vocal sample at the center of it — urgent, pleading, cut into a loop that strips away context and leaves only the raw emotional residue of need. The track captures a specific kind of euphoric terror, the feeling that pleasure and danger have become indistinguishable. It was part of the wave that crested into Belgian new beat and early rave culture, a moment when electronic music discovered that the body could be bypassed entirely and the nervous system addressed directly. The production is minimal in component count but maximal in impact — every element chosen because nothing else would do the same work. This is music for the point in the night when conversation has become impossible and the only available language is physical.
