Mustang

Bartees Strange uses "Mustang" to demonstrate the quality that makes him one of the most genuinely singular voices in contemporary indie rock: the ability to hold contradictory sonic worlds in a single song without it ever feeling like a stunt. The track moves between hushed, almost folk-tender passages and eruptions of post-punk urgency, his voice shifting registers dramatically — barely above a whisper in one phrase, then climbing into something raw and almost choral moments later. The guitar work is patient and then jagged, and the rhythm section creates tension by holding back before releasing. The Mustang here reads as both literal and deeply symbolic, a vehicle for aspiration, for inherited American mythology, for the gap between what freedom is supposed to look like and what it actually costs, particularly for a Black man navigating spaces where that mythology was never written for him. Strange grew up between musical worlds — classical training, hardcore shows, Black church music — and "Mustang" holds all of that in its structure simultaneously. It rewards careful listening, each pass revealing layers of texture and intent. Best heard at high volume in a space where you can let it move through you.
