I Don't Like It Like This

Where much of the band's catalog wraps its bitterness in softness, this track keeps the softness but sharpens the edge underneath. The arrangement is characteristic — muted, reverbed guitars, drums that barely assert themselves, a general atmosphere of studied understatement — but the emotional undertone carries something more restless, something closer to quiet indignation than to sadness. The vocals are flat in a way that functions as affect rather than deficiency, a deliberate choice that communicates exhaustion with performance, with the social contract of pretending things are acceptable when they aren't. The song's lyrical core is a refusal, a gentle but firm withdrawal from something that has asked too much without offering enough in return. There's a political dimension to much of The Radio Dept.'s work — a leftist, Malmö-shaped disenchantment with consumer culture and the aesthetics of conformity — and that current runs beneath this track without surfacing as polemic.
