Time Baby III
Medicine
Medicine operated in a corner of the shoegaze world that leaned harder into noise and abrasion than most of their peers, and "Time Baby III" makes that tendency fully explicit. The guitars don't shimmer here — they grind, cycling through a narcotic drone that owes as much to Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music as to My Bloody Valentine. Brad Laner's production is dense and almost claustrophobic, layering distortion upon distortion until melody becomes a kind of geological feature buried under sediment. The vocals are treated and pushed back in the mix until they function less as communication than as another textural element, syllables dissolving into the surrounding noise. What saves this from pure punishment is an underlying pulse — repetitive, hypnotic, giving the chaos just enough structure to feel intentional rather than random. The emotional register is one of obliteration, not aggression: this isn't angry music so much as music that wants to dissolve the listener's edges, to create a state where selfhood becomes temporarily optional. It represents the American noise-rock underground of the early nineties at its most uncompromising, where Los Angeles bands were pushing the British shoegaze template toward something rawer and less concerned with beauty for its own sake. This is headphone music for late nights when you want your thoughts drowned out completely.
