Interpretation

"Diplomat's Son" is the slowest, most intoxicated Vampire Weekend has ever been, and it suits them in ways their sharper songs don't quite reach. The track opens into a woozy, hazy atmosphere built from sampled loops and soft percussion — the M.I.A. sample that anchors the production gives the song a slightly disorienting quality, familiar and strange simultaneously, like recognizing a face in a dream. Ezra Koenig's voice is deliberately understated here, almost conversational, and that restraint creates more intimacy than a more technically impressive delivery would. The song tells a story about a summer romance with someone gilded by privilege and circumstance, a relationship that can't quite survive its own context, and the lyrics are specific enough — a hotel pool, a record collection, the peculiar weightlessness of someone else's money — that they feel witnessed rather than invented. The production expands and contracts unpredictably, quiet passages opening into denser textures without the conventional structural logic of verse-chorus-verse. This is Vampire Weekend at their most psychedelic, their most willing to let a mood sustain itself past the point of comfort into something genuinely strange. It fits late summer evenings when the light is going and you're thinking about something or someone you can't quite articulate.
