The Stooges
There is a peculiar, suffocating quality to this song that makes it unlike almost anything else in rock. The tempo is sluggish, almost confrontationally slow, and the guitars churn with a leaden, downtuned heaviness that feels less like playing and more like dragging something across gravel. The rhythm section doesn't so much groove as grind. Iggy's vocal delivery is a masterclass in performed boredom — flat, nasal, and yet somehow deeply unsettling, as though the emptiness he's describing has infected the performance itself. The song is about the texture of a particular kind of depression: not dramatic despair but the hollow, grey nothingness of a day with nothing in it. That the Stooges could make aesthetic capital out of something so defiantly unappealing is the whole point. This is a song for the afternoon that won't end — those slow, winter hours when the light is already failing and you have nowhere to be and the fact of that feels enormous.
