Interpretation

Everything about Animals is confrontational and scabrous — industrial guitar, pounding rhythms, Waters howling about the corruption of the powerful and the passivity of the meek. Then, bracketing the whole record at both ends, comes this: one man, one acoustic guitar, two minutes of unguarded warmth. There is no production to speak of, no orchestration or sonic architecture. Just the slight resonance of the guitar body and a voice stripped of performance. Waters sings about intimate love as a kind of survival strategy — the private space two people build against a world that has otherwise been described, at length, as a pigsty. The chords are simple, the delivery almost tentative, as if speaking too clearly might break whatever is being protected. Its cultural weight comes partly from what surrounds it: the tenderness lands differently when you've just spent forty minutes inside one of rock's most furious political albums. You reach for this on an evening when the news has been wearing, when you want to remember that the argument for human decency doesn't always need to be made at volume.
