Interpretation

This is not a song that arrives — it descends. The tempo is funeral-slow from the first note, the guitar tone a distorted avalanche of low-end weight that presses down on the chest like physical mass. Iommi's riff moves in a lumbering, almost reluctant cycle, and Ward's drumming has the quality of something inevitable rather than driven. Ozzy Osbourne's vocal here is not the screaming banshee of the band's faster material — instead he sounds almost plaintive, a thin human voice caught inside a crushing machine. The lyric is genuinely harrowing: a narrative about heroin addiction drawn in unflinching detail, tracing the arc from first use through dependency to destruction, and the music enacts the trap — the slow groove is seductive in exactly the way the subject matter describes. This is 1970, and very few rock songs were saying this plainly. It stands as one of the heaviest achievements in early metal not because of volume alone but because the weight is moral as much as sonic. You do not put this on casually; it demands attention and delivers consequence.
