Confusion Break Bone
Fela Kuti
Confusion Break Bone opens with a sense of accumulating disorder that the music itself enacts. The horn section enters stacked and slightly dissonant at the edges, as if too many voices are trying to be heard at once — which is, of course, exactly the point. The production here is dense and live-feeling, the Africa 70 generating a collective roar that Tony Allen holds together through sheer rhythmic authority. His kick drum is a constant underground pulse, patient and inevitable while everything above it churns. The track has a longer, more spiraling quality than some of Fela's tighter compositions — it wanders into itself, circles back, feels genuinely confused in the best possible way, as if the music is performing the very social condition it describes. Nigerian society under corrupt and chaotic governance, people pulling in contradictory directions until the whole structure cracks — Fela renders this not through lyrical metaphor alone but through arrangement, letting the horns argue with each other before resolving into a shared riff that never quite feels resolved. His vocal is rawer than usual, less the cool prosecutor and more the exhausted citizen. There's a darkness in the saxophone work here that his more famous records sometimes hold at bay. You return to this one not for energy but for honesty — the recognition that sometimes music should sound as tangled as the thing it describes.
