One of the weirder and more underappreciated moves in the 2015 BIGBANG campaign, "Sober" sits in an electronic space that's difficult to pin down: the verses are almost minimal techno, stripped and slightly anxious, before the chorus opens into something brighter and more euphoric. The tension between those two modes is where the song lives — it never fully commits to either the darkness or the release, which makes it an accurate portrait of its stated subject. The lyrics circle the disorientation of coming down, the strange clarity of sobriety after prolonged excess, the world feeling too bright and too sharp. G-Dragon's vocal delivery in the verses is almost spoken, deliberately flat, while the chorus allows itself to lift. Production choices are clinical and precise in a way that mirrors the lyrical content — there are no warm textures here, mostly hard synth edges and processed drums. It rewards repeat listening more than it rewards an initial encounter; you have to let it settle before its logic becomes clear. Culturally, it represented BIGBANG engaging with EDM at its most architecturally rigorous rather than its most immediately gratifying. Reach for it when you're coming out of something and trying to understand where you've landed.
