"Stepping into Tomorrow" carries the optimism implied by its title but refuses to make it cheap. The production glides on a Rhodes electric piano figure that is simultaneously celebratory and slightly melancholic — the kind of chord voicing that sounds like looking forward while standing still. The rhythm section is loose, swinging with a shuffle that nods to classic soul and jazz fusion of the early 1970s without simply impersonating it. Madlib threads in orchestral elements — strings and brass — that swell at unexpected moments, giving the track a sense of scale that its relatively spare arrangement shouldn't be able to achieve.
