Pace
Nubya Garcia
Where the album's title track opens space, this one fills it — a more forward-leaning, propulsive composition that reveals the rhythmic ambition beneath Garcia's compositional instincts. The groove here locks in tighter, the drums and bass interlocking with a precision that creates a kind of forward momentum, a feeling of steady acceleration without any single moment of rupture. Garcia's saxophone is more assertive here, her phrases landing with greater attack before releasing into long, airborne lines. There is a tension between the strictness of the underlying groove and the looseness of her improvisation that gives the track its particular energy — like watching someone walk a tightrope and make it look like strolling. The harmonic language draws on modal jazz but pushes toward something more rhythmically complex, with polyrhythmic layers accumulating over the course of the piece until the texture feels dense and full without ever becoming cluttered. Emotionally the music conveys something like determined joy — not the ecstatic release of a climax, but the sustained pleasure of sustained effort, of knowing you are exactly where you should be doing exactly what you should be doing. It belongs to the afternoon more than the night — music for movement, for the particular kind of focus that comes when body and mind are synchronized and the work flows without friction.
