トリセツ (still charting 2020)

"トリセツ" is Kana Nishino's most conceptually perfect song: an entire relationship manual delivered as bubblegum pop, with the woman writing the instructions. The production is bright and uncluttered — chirpy synths, a bouncing mid-tempo beat, handclaps, a chorus that lands like a jingle by design — and that lightness is the joke's delivery system. Nishino sings in her signature sweet, slightly nasal upper register, girlish on the surface but timed like a comedian's, letting the punchlines sit exactly where the melody peaks. The lyric is structured as product documentation for a girlfriend: handle with care, praise regularly, remember these dates, warranty is lifetime, malfunctions are normal and require patience. It is simultaneously a parody of feminine high-maintenance stereotypes and a sincere demand to be loved on her own terms — an ambiguity Japanese listeners argued about happily for years. Written as the theme for a romantic comedy film, it outgrew the movie and became a wedding-reception standard, a karaoke fixture, and a phrase that entered everyday speech. It was still charting into 2020, five years on. Best heard with friends, sung badly and loudly, or alone in the car when you want to feel unapologetic about needing things.
