Marshmello builds an electronic landscape here that's genuinely unusual in pop — lush and maximalist at the drops, but somehow still intimate, still Khalid's. The production moves between acoustic warmth and synthetic shimmer, the two elements in dialogue rather than at war. Khalid's voice is one of the more distinctive instruments in contemporary pop: a teenage soul timbre that sounds older than it should, carrying melody with the ease of someone who doesn't know they're being heard.
