Sticky
KISS OF LIFE
"Sticky" is the most purely fun thing in KISS OF LIFE's catalog, a funk-forward groove machine that refuses to sit still. The bass line is the spine of everything — elastic, insistent, constantly threatening to slip ahead of the beat before snapping back with a grin. Guitar chops pepper the texture, and there's a horn accent buried in the arrangement that surfaces just when you need it. The tempo is quick enough to demand movement but not so fast that the groove loses its syrup. KISS OF LIFE's vocals here shift into a playful register, looser and more elastic than their ballad work, the members trading lines like a relay team that's done this a hundred times and still finds it amusing. The song's central conceit — being stuck on someone who has the same problem — lands as comic but not trivial, the emotion real underneath the shimmer. Production-wise this nods hard at the P-Funk continuum and the Minneapolis sound, the kind of funk that cares less about cool posturing and more about making a room impossible to stand still in. The song is maximally effective in a crowded space where everyone is already a little warmed up — a DJ transition track that sounds like a main event.
