"에잇" pairs IU with SUGA and produces something neither had quite made before: a bright, driving pop-rock track that carries grief inside its brightness. The production is deliberately buoyant — chiming, slightly distorted guitars, a propulsive kick, a wash of synth that keeps everything slightly out of focus, like a memory rather than a scene. The contrast is the entire architecture. IU sings in a clear, high, almost weightless tone, and the lightness makes the lyric land harder: an island where nothing dies, a summer that never ends, the specific bargain of imagining a place where loss cannot reach. Written in the wake of losing a close friend, and released in 2020 when everyone was separately losing things, it became a shared object of mourning without ever presenting itself as a sad song. SUGA's verse is unusually restrained, more spoken-close than aggressive, holding the emotional register rather than disrupting it. The eight of the title is her age at recording, twenty-eight, and the number carries the idea of a loop that never resolves.
