Interpretation

"Maniac" is Conan Gray at his most theatrically petty, and that's the pleasure of it. Built on a bright, propulsive synth-pop chassis — bouncing bass line, handclap-adjacent percussion, a chorus that detonates into layered gang-vocal shouting — it sounds like a party thrown specifically to spite one guest. The production is glossy in the late-2010s bedroom-pop-gone-major way: clean, wide, with just enough distortion on the low end to suggest a rock song trying to escape. Gray's voice does the heavy lifting emotionally. He sings the verses in a clipped, gossipy near-mutter, dropping into a mocking sing-song, then slings the chorus out in a full-throated yelp that lands somewhere between karaoke catharsis and genuine rage. Lyrically it's a breakup song inverted: the ex is spreading stories, calling at 3 a.m., burning down the narrator's reputation, and the narrator's response isn't grief but a diagnosis — you're the maniac here, not me. What makes it specific is the detail work: the drunk phone calls, the crashed car, the friends taking sides. Culturally it belongs to the post-Tumblr, TikTok-native wave of confessional pop where the singer is also the narrator of a very online social drama. Best played loud in a car with people who know every word, or alone while composing a text you'll never send.
