Ruthless
The Marías
The Marías traffic in slow-burning haze, and "Ruthless" is one of their most intoxicating concoctions. The production wraps around you like smoke — reverb-drenched electric guitar lines drift through a languid rhythm section while layered harmonies create a sensation closer to immersion than listening. María Zardoya's voice is the defining instrument: low, sensual, and strangely detached, as if she's narrating desire from somewhere slightly outside her own body. The tempo never rushes; the song luxuriates in its own warmth the way heat rises off asphalt. What she's describing is the irrational pull toward someone you already know will hurt you — not a lament about it, but an almost clinical acknowledgment that wanting something bad for you is its own kind of surrender. There's a Chicano soul influence threaded through the indie psych arrangement, the kind of sound that grew out of Los Angeles' underground DIY scene in the late 2010s, where Spanish-language inflection and classic pop structure melted into something entirely contemporary. This is music for a dim room at 11 p.m., a glass of something half-finished nearby, the kind of night where you let yourself feel complicated things without needing to resolve them. It doesn't try to snap you out of your infatuation — it pulls up a chair beside you and stays.
