Interpretation

"Lost" is a song built on movement — it fizzes and glides like something carbonated, the production skipping lightly across synth textures and finger-snapped percussion. It has a particular quality of being in-between: in-between cities, in-between relationships, in-between versions of yourself. Frank's vocals are bright and relatively unguarded here, less elliptical than much of his work, the melody genuinely buoyant in a way that catches you off guard. The story is about a couple adrift in sensation and substances and pleasure that is also somehow lonely. There's something almost tropical in its lightness, but the brightness has a slight overexposure to it, like a photograph taken in too much sun. It belongs to the moment when young people with some money and no anchor drift through cities that aren't their own. You reach for it at the start of something new — a trip, a relationship — when the uncertainty still reads as freedom.
