"Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is the loneliest thing Green Day ever put on the radio, and it became inescapable precisely because loneliness turned out to be the most universal thing on American Idiot. It's built on one of the most recognizable clean guitar figures of the decade — a spare, tremolo-tinged minor arpeggio that walks in circles — with Mike Dirnt's bass and Tré Cool's brushed, marching snare keeping a funeral pace before the chorus swells into full-band widescreen. Armstrong sings the verses almost flatly, close and unadorned, and then the harmonies stack behind him on "my shadow's the only one that walks beside me," which is the trick: the arrangement gives him company exactly where the lyric says he has none. It belongs to the Jesus of Suburbia character, a kid who has left home and found that escape is just a different kind of empty. Rob Cavallo produced it with a cinematic sweep that made it play as easily on adult pop stations as on rock ones, and it won Record of the Year in 2006. It's the 2 a.m. walk-home song — headphones on, streetlights, nobody texting back.
