There is something almost unbearably vivid about this song — it opens with a synthesizer riff that sounds like pure childhood wonder compressed into electricity, cascading and bright, the kind of melodic line that triggers something pre-verbal in the listener. MGMT built this as a sardonic commentary on the loss of youthful freedom, but the music refuses to be sardonic: the production is enormous, euphoric, uncontainable. Drums crash with deliberate clumsiness, as though played by someone who learned rhythm from watching cartoons. The vocal delivery is dreamy and half-spoken, floating through verses with the detachment of someone recounting a memory they can no longer fully access. Emotionally, the song does something paradoxical — it creates euphoria while lamenting that euphoria is finite. It was a defining artifact of the late 2000s indie-psych moment, the era when a generation raised on irony found themselves genuinely moved and weren't sure what to do about it. The lyrics speak to the rawness of being young before the world teaches you to protect yourself, before the systems and expectations close in. You'd play this at a summer bonfire where everyone is in their mid-twenties, trying to hold onto something they can't name. Or alone in a room, dancing with nobody watching, pretending the whole world is still wide open.
