Moonlight
XXXTENTACION
"Moonlight" is XXXTENTACION at his most weightless and hypnotic: a two-minute sketch built from a pitched-up, bell-like synth loop, a soft trap shuffle, and vocals drenched in reverb until they blur into the beat itself. He layers his own voice into a smeared choir, singing rather than rapping, in a light, almost childlike register that floats above the low end. The mix is intentionally lo-fi and unfinished, which is central to its appeal — it sounds like something recorded at 4am on a laptop and never revisited. Lyrically it's a slippery blend of infatuation and dread, spinning around a girl and around the narrator's own dissolving sense of self, with "moonlight" functioning as both a lover and a state of intoxication. Coming from ?, an album that swung violently between rage and tenderness, this is the tender pole, and it became one of the most-streamed songs of the SoundCloud generation, a fixture of edits, night-drive playlists and mourning after his death in June 2018. It's music for the specific loneliness of scrolling in the dark. Listen with the lights off, or moving through a city at low speed, letting the loop carry you past thought.
