Interpretation

"679" is Paterson, New Jersey distilled into three minutes of joyous, off-key euphoria. Peoples' beat is skeletal — a bright, almost music-box synth melody, thundering 808 slides, and hi-hats that skitter without ever crowding the vocal — leaving enormous space for Fetty Wap to do the thing nobody else could. He doesn't rap so much as yodel: a nasal, cracked, wide-open melodic wail that ignores conventional pitch and lands somewhere between a hook and a siren. Monty's verse grounds it with a grittier, more conventional flow, and the Remy Boyz ad-libs ("1738!") function as communal punctuation, the sound of a crew shouting over each other in a good mood. Lyrically it's flexing and flirting — money, Air Force Ones, a girl he's convinced he can convert — but the words matter far less than the delivery, which carries an unguarded happiness rare in trap. Alongside "Trap Queen," it made 2015 the year a one-eyed kid from Jersey with no rap-technician credentials owned the summer through sheer melodic instinct. Meant for a cookout, a crowded car, anywhere a group of people can shout the numbers back at the speakers.
