"679" is Paterson, New Jersey distilled into three minutes of joyous, off-key euphoria. Peoples' beat is skeletal — a bright, almost music-box synth melody, thundering 808 slides, and hi-hats that skitter without ever crowding the vocal — leaving enormous space for Fetty Wap to do the thing nobody else could. He doesn't rap so much as yodel: a nasal, cracked, wide-open melodic wail that ignores conventional pitch and lands somewhere between a hook and a siren.
