Around the World
Daft Punk
"Around the World" is an exercise in hypnosis through pure repetition. The song consists almost entirely of its title phrase, sung and chanted over a disco-funk groove so precisely engineered it feels algorithmic — and that precision is exactly the point. Daft Punk understood that repetition in dance music isn't laziness but ritual, the way a phrase deepens in meaning each time it cycles back through a slightly different emotional context. The bass line is fat and rolling, the guitars lock into a pattern that grooves without ever straining, and the arrangement shifts in texture across its duration — things drop out, return, reconfigure. The robot voices create a kind of cheerful inhuman warmth, affection delivered through a vocoder as a philosophical statement about what music is. This is house and techno's lineage translated into something that could exist on pop radio without losing any of its structural intelligence. It belongs to the mid-1990s Parisian moment when French producers were reimagining the entirety of black American dance music through an electronic lens. The song works in any room — a club, a kitchen, a car — and it works because its simplicity is complete, not reduced. There's nothing missing; the restraint is the richness.
