恋人がサンタクロース

"恋人がサンタクロース" is the engine of Japan's entire romantic-Christmas mythology. From the 1980 winter concept album SURF & SNOW, it opens with bells and a bounding, near-galloping rhythm section, piles on bright horns and stacked backing vocals, and never once slows down — it's built like a sleigh ride, all forward momentum and glitter. The lyric is a memory frame: a little girl is told by a strange older woman that someday her lover will be Santa Claus, a claim she dismisses as nonsense, until years later the prophecy quietly comes true. Yuming sings it with cheerful theatrical brightness, more narrator than confessor, her thin voice sitting slightly above the arrangement like someone telling a story over a party. It became inseparable from the resort-ski culture Yuming helped invent for bubble-era Japan — snow, someone's car, a hotel in Nagano — and later from the film 私をスキーに連れてって, cementing December in Japan as a couples' holiday rather than a family one. There's no ache in it, which is rare for her; it's uncomplicated delight, a song about believing an absurd promise and being rewarded.
