Interpretation

One of electronic pop's great recyclings — ABBA's "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" chopped and filtered into a club weapon that honors its source while doing something completely new with it. The Giorgio Moroder-influenced rhythm track is relentless, a disco metronome over which Madonna layers her most dance-floor-functional vocal: minimal, groove-serving, perfectly deployed. The lyric is essentially a love-letter to time itself passing on the dance floor, but that's secondary to the physical experience of the production. This is body music, designed for a specific physical context — the moment in a club when the song change makes the whole room aware of itself simultaneously. It arrived at a point when many assumed her commercial relevance had passed. It was a corrective.
