Interpretation

The album's title track is a miniature, barely a minute and a half, and it functions less as a song than as an atmosphere with a doorway in it. A shimmering, slightly detuned keyboard figure circles over a bed of processed guitar that Robert Fripp-adjacent treatments render more liquid than percussive, everything soaked in a soft phasing that makes the stereo field breathe. Written as the theme for a British television arts program, it carries that odd quality of music built to introduce something else — perpetually opening, never arriving. The harmony is modal and unhurried, avoiding any leading tone that would push toward resolution, so the piece hovers in a state of mild, curious wonder rather than longing. There is no voice; the melody itself does the singing, in a tone that suggests light through leaves or the green after-image of a strong sun. Within the album's sequence it acts as a hinge between the eccentric pop songs and the instrumental interludes, quietly arguing that Eno's two modes belong to the same imagination. It suits early morning, or the first minutes of a long train ride — moments when you are between places and content to be. Its incompleteness is a deliberate hospitality: the listener finishes it.
