This is one of the more surprising pieces in Einaudi's catalog: a piano that doesn't stay in the European classical tradition it otherwise inhabits, but opens itself toward West African melodic sensibility. The right hand traces a pattern that feels like it belongs to a balafon or kora tradition — circular, gently percussive, rooted in the pentatonic language of the savanna rather than the concert hall. The left hand provides a warm, grounding pulse rather than conventional bass movement, and together the hands create something that breathes differently from Einaudi's more Nordic-toned work. The emotional quality is open and generous, less inward than much of his output — there is sunlight in the structure, a sense of outdoors, of communal music rather than private contemplation. It doesn't appropriate so much as pay sincere attention, letting the melodic logic of another tradition inform the piano's possibilities. The tempo is easy, almost improvisatory in feeling despite being composed, and the repetition serves the meditative quality common to West African forms. You would reach for this on a warm morning with open windows, when the day feels spacious and uncomplicated, or when you want music that faces outward rather than in. It is among the most joyful things Einaudi has written, and its joy has a specific, earned quality — generous without being naive.
