Monk's piano underneath is sparse, as it always is, but here the emptiness between notes feels intentional in a way that amplifies rather than subtracts. The tempo is slow enough to let each chord breathe, and the harmonic language is dense with chromatic tensions that never quite fully resolve, as though the emotion refuses to settle. The song was written for a woman Monk loved before he loved Nellie, and that biographical weight is impossible to shake once you know it — there is a quality of remembering in it, of turning something precious over and over in your hands. The piano voicings are thick and dissonant but also tender, which is a paradox Monk understood better than anyone. This is late-night music, early-morning music, music for a room with one lamp on after everyone else has gone home. It asks for stillness and rewards it generously.
