Interpretation

In November 1945, a group of musicians assembled in a New York studio and recorded something that split jazz history cleanly in two. The tempo is extraordinary — not merely fast but ferociously fast, a tempo at which most musicians cannot play coherent melodies, only reflex. Parker plays coherent melodies. The piece is constructed over the chord changes of "Cherokee," a popular song of the era, but at this speed and with this level of chromatic reinterpretation, the original is unrecognizable, subsumed entirely into something new. Parker's alto saxophone sound has a particular rawness to it here — not rough, but close to the bone, as though the speed has stripped away any decorative overlay and left only the essential instrument-and-breath connection. Miles Davis, who was 19 years old that day, plays the opening theme and the close alongside Parker, and the contrast in maturity is audible in the best possible way: Davis sounds like someone trying to keep up with something that keeps escaping forward. This is music that changed what musicians thought was possible.
