Interpretation

Chan Chan is not a song so much as a landscape you step into. The piece opens with a distinctive tres guitar figure — angular, slightly percussive — and from the first notes you understand you've entered a Cuba that exists outside of time, neither nostalgic nor contemporary but simply present. Compay Segundo recorded this at an age when most musicians have long retired, and his voice carries that weight without performing it; the roughness is structural, not decorative. The song's narrative is almost hallucinatory — images of people and rivers and rural travel that accumulate into something more felt than understood. What Ibrahim Ferrer and the other Buena Vista players brought to this recording was a kind of collective memory, decades of son cubano lived in the body and summoned without effort. The rhythm moves slowly but purposefully, never lazy, the clave heartbeat underneath everything else. Wim Wenders' film introduced this music to a global audience in 1999, but the music itself came from somewhere much older. This is what you play when you want to feel like you're somewhere with deep soil.
