El Cuarto de Tula is the band at full throttle, and the contrast with Chan Chan is immediate and instructive. Where that track meditates, this one ignites — the percussion arrives early and doesn't apologize, the horns push in with a kind of joyful aggression, and the vocalists trade verses with the playful urgency of people who have been performing together long enough to read each other's breathing. The song is ostensibly about a fire in Tula's room, but the heat is obviously metaphorical, the double entendres stacked so casually that they feel like part of the air rather than the text. Ibrahim Ferrer in particular sounds liberated here, his voice carrying a raspy, playful authority that suits the material perfectly. This is son cubano in its most carnivalesque register — music designed for dancing in tight spaces, for bodies close together, for the kind of late-night party that starts outside time and ends there too. The Buena Vista recordings as a whole were an act of historical recovery, but El Cuarto de Tula specifically is a reminder that preservation doesn't have to be solemn.
