Brown arranged this track around gaps as much as sound, those rhythmic holes in the pattern where the body fills in what the music withholds. The bass and drums form an interlocking mechanism of almost frightening precision, but it never feels mechanical because there's so much human heat radiating from every performance. Brown's vocal here is more declarative than on many of his recordings — each line delivered as statement of fact, his voice moving between conversational cool and eruptive intensity in the space of a single phrase.
